OC Register to pay carriers $22 million to settle lawsuit

The attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of 5,000 carriers said they should have been hired as employees, entitled to workers comp coverage, social security withholding and other benefits. Jurors were surprised by the settlement. "May the record reflect 'mouths agaping,' " the judge told the court recorder after he informed the jury they were being dismissed.
